Philippians Chapter 1

Favorite Verse:

Philippians 1:20 “…as it is my eager expectation and hope that I will not be at all ashamed, but that with full courage now as always Christ will be honored in my body, whether by life or by death”

Paul is writing to the Philippian church and essentially holding nothing back. He is currently in prison on behalf of defending his faith in Jesus, yet his words are nothing but bold and truthful. He does not let his current circumstances stop him from spreading the message of the Gospel.

Thoughts:

This verse stuck out to me because just last night I was telling my husband Josiah that I was feeling discouraged in life. Discouraged because being a full time mom is hard. I realize that there are a ton of blessings that come with motherhood and in particular the oppurtunity that I have which is to stay home with our son James every day. But just because I do not have to wake up and run out the door to work every day doesn’t mean that my life is PJ’s and pancakes all day.

The days can feel very repetitive, lonely, mind numbing, and exhausting. Even though I am keeping a tiny human alive, my self worth is at an all time low. Is it the fact that I am not bringing home a paycheck every week? Maybe. Is it the lack of social connections and confidence building that can be obtained in the work environment? I’m sure that has something to do with it. At the end of the day my worth is not defined by my paycheck, or my popularity at work or even my accomplishments. Am I using my life to share the Gospel with others? Now that is something of importance. And something that I do not necessarily have the courage to do often, or nearly at all.

Jesus does not care about any of the assets we bring to the table, we are all equally loved by God and we are all welcomed into His family through faith in Jesus Christ. When I start to lack courage, feel worthless, and question my purpose in life Christ fulfills all of the gaps. He says, come as you are. We are all able to share the simple yet powerful message of the Gospel, whether you’re the CEO of the most successful company in the world or a stay at home mom to one child just trying to get through the day. Jesus is there for us always, and just like Paul, we need to be there for Jesus no matter what.
